 *** The data were obtained by aligning histone sequences of each histone category with MUSCLE v5. With these multiple sequence alignments, HMM profiles were generated in HMMER. The HMM profiles are probabilistic models that encapsulate the evolutionary changes that have occurred in each histone category. Residues that show strong levels of conservation are likely of functional or structural importance. HMM profiles can be visualised with the Skylign webserver (http://skylign.org/).
